Until a few years ago, it seemed unrealistic to combine sport – particularly professional sport – with diabetes. However, it is possible to live with this condition, lead a normal life and, perhaps, even become a leading figure in sport.
Alexander Zverev, the future world number one in tennis, has achieved this. And so has Emanuele Rao, one of the key players at Pisa Sporting Club and in the Under-20 national team.
For this reason, representatives of AGD Pisa (the Association of Young Diabetics) have requested and been granted the opportunity to meet someone who is a true role model for them. The meeting is scheduled to take place just before the Pisa v Cremonese match, which is due to be played next Saturday (7.30 pm) at the Cetilar Arena, when a delegation from AGD Pisa will greet Emanuele Rao and present him with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his commitment and dedication.
AGD Pisa was founded in 1993 with the aim of becoming a valuable point of reference for discussing family, school and social issues related to type 1 diabetes. This aim was shared by a group of parents who felt the need to ‘get involved’ and do something more for their children and their condition. This is the reason behind the honour bestowed upon Nerazzurri number 17:
“Today, together with AGD Pisa APS, there are many children and teens living with type 1 diabetes. We’re here to raise awareness, because the onset of diabetes is marked by clear signs: frequent urination, intense thirst, and fatigue. Anyone can recognize these signs—parents, grandparents, teachers, and coaches alike. Spotting them early can make all the difference. And I’m also here to show that diabetes doesn’t have to limit your dreams or passions. We’d like to thank Emanuele Rao because, through his story, he’s not just a soccer player worthy of applause, but a real-life role model for all the children who, by looking up to you today, can believe even more strongly in their own dreams.
