This resulted in the Anno Pisano ab Incarnatione Domini (or Christi), in advance of the common calendar. March 25 became the first day of the new solar year, which would then end on the following March 24.

The Pisan calendar also remained in effect for centuries in the lands belonging to the Republic of Pisa: the coast between Portovenere and Civitavecchia, Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Corsica, Sardinia, Balearic Islands, Gaeta, Reggio Calabria, Tropea, Lipari, Trapani, Mazara, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, the city of Azov (in the Sea of the same name, at the mouth of the Don River) and finally Constantinople, where the Pisans and Venetians were the only Westerners allowed to settle.

The calendar in “Stile Pisano” remained valid until November 20, 1749, the day on which the Grand Duke of Tuscany Francis I of Lorraine ordered that in all Tuscan states the year 1750 would begin on the first day of the following January. Thus the Pisan State, formed roughly by the present provinces of Pisa and Livorno, had to conform to the use of the Gregorian calendar like the rest of Tuscany.

And today, in keeping with tradition, the beginning of the new year will be marked by a sundial: at 12 noon a ray of sunlight penetrating the cathedral will illuminate a marble egg placed on top of a shelf on the pillar next to Giovanni Pisano’s pulpit on the opposite side; at that moment the Mayor of Pisa will utter the following phrase “To the greater glory of God, and invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Rainier our Patron, we greet the year 2026″ and the city will enter the new year

HAPPY PISAN YEAR TO ALL!

The Republic of Pisa enters the year 2027 according to the so-called “Pisan Style” calendar.
